Vinicunca 12 Lagoons

The Vinicunca + 12 Lagoons tour is an epic adventure that combines two of the most impressive landscapes in the Vilcanota Mountains. Unlike the more common tourist routes, this expedition delves into the immensity of the Andes, revealing a world of colors and high-altitude bodies of water.

Vinicunca, known as the Mountain of 7 Colors, is a geological formation that surprises with its vibrant bands of color. Its mineral composition, the result of erosion and sedimentation, creates a visual spectacle that seems taken from another planet. The hike to its summit is demanding, but the reward is a panoramic view that encompasses the entire chromatic spectrum of the mountain, with the imposing Ausangate snow-capped mountain in the background.

On the other hand, the 12-lake circuit is a best-kept secret. Located in the surroundings of the same mountain range, these glacial lagoons vary in color, from turquoise to deep blue. Each one is a crystalline reflection of the Andean sky and the snow-capped peaks that surround them. This journey offers a more solitary and authentic experience, allowing a deep connection with the region’s wild nature.

Difficulty and Preparation

TWO DAYS AND ONE NIGHT

2-Day, 1-Night Itinerary: Vinicunca + 12 Lagoons

Day 1: Cusco – Checacupe – 12 Lagoons Circuit

The tour begins very early, around 4:00 a.m., with pickup from your hotel. A shuttle will take you south of Cusco on a nearly three-hour journey, passing through the picturesque villages of Checacupe and Pitumarca.

Upon reaching the base of the mountain, you’ll begin a challenging hike along a less-traveled trail that plunges you into the heart of the Vilcanota Mountain Range. The goal of the day is to explore the impressive circuit of the 12 lagoons, which range in color from deep blue to vibrant turquoise, reflecting the sky and snow-capped peaks. The hike is demanding due to the altitude, but the reward is spectacular panoramic views, with the majestic Ausangate Mountains dominating the horizon.

After a full day of hiking, you’ll arrive at base camp, a remote and peaceful spot in the high mountains. You’ll have dinner and spend the night under a starry sky, preparing for the next day’s adventure.

  • Distance: 16 km (approx. 8-9 hours of hiking)
  • Maximum altitude: 4,800 m.a.s.l.

You’ll have ample time to enjoy the scenery, take photographs, and contemplate the unique beauty of Vinicunca and the Red Valley in the distance. Then, you’ll begin the descent back to the starting point, where transportation will be waiting for you.

After a refreshing lunch, you’ll begin the return journey to Cusco. The return trip will allow you to rest and reflect on the incredible adventure you’ve just completed.
